Prince Philip ‘suffered cracked rib’ before Harry and Meghan’s wedding

Prince Philip recently underwent surgery on his hip, but after an incredible recovery, he managed to attend his grandson Prince Harry’s wedding to new wife Meghan last weekend – alongside his wife the Queen.

However, despite walking unaided in the grounds of Windsor Castle, a lot of viewers couldn’t help commenting on the Duke of Edinburgh’s tired and rather gaunt appearance. While it’s completely understandable following major surgery, especially aged 96, it’s now claimed there could have been another reason why he looked a little pained.

The Sun reports he was recovering from a cracked rib at the nuptials, and was likely in some pain. According to the publication, he slipped in the bath just a few days before – and only days after giving up his crutches following his surgery.

However, despite the injury, he not only soldiered on to attend the wedding – but did it without a crutch or stick in sight.

A source reportedly told the news outlet: “The Duke is not a fan of showering and prefers to bathe. But he’s a determined man and nothing was going to stop him attending nor would he take any kind of walking aid.”

He’s been showered with praise for his brave and strong appearance, and author and family biographer Penny Junor described it as “completely heroic”.

“Given that he is 96 years old and the operation was just six weeks ago, I think that shows what an extraordinary man he is,” she told The Sun. “That will have meant a huge amount to Prince Harry. He is enormously fond of his grandfather.”

Meanwhile, more viewers have commended Philip for his incredible attitude and strength, with one viewer writing on Twitter: “Phil’s a legend,” while another added: “That’s what you call a proper hard working man, even at his age.”

Earlier this year, Buckingham Palace said Prince Philip’s surgery had been planned for some time.

“His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London this afternoon, for planned surgery on his hip which will take place tomorrow. Further updates will be issued when appropriate.”

Although he has officially stepped down from all royal duties, he was forced to miss several important events including the traditional Easter Sunday service and the Maundy service. He has attended a total of 22,219 solo engagements since 1952 and has given up some special causes that are very close to his heart since stepping down.

Meanwhile, Philip was pictured several times during the wedding ceremony last Saturday, sat beside the Queen throughout the service. Notorious for his witty humour and outrageous comments, he kept a straight face and appeared silent throughout most of the ceremony.

Are you a fan of Prince Philip? Do you think he should be applauded for battling through pain for his grandson’s wedding?
