Prince Harry and Meghan to visit Australia in first overseas tour

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are coming Down Under! The pair will make an official visit to Australia in October as part of their first official overseas tour as a married couple.

Kensington Palace confirmed the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, will travel to Sydney for the 2018 Invictus Games, Prince Harry’s world-renowned sports competition for wounded defence veterans.

The palace is yet to reveal details about exactly where the couple will visit in Australia besides Sydney, but did announce they’ll also swing by Commonwealth countries New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will undertake an official visit to Australia, Fiji, the Kingdom of Tonga, and New Zealand in the Autumn 🇦🇺🇫🇯🇹🇴🇳🇿

While plenty of royal fans are excited about the news, it seems none more so than Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who this morning said he was very much looking forward hosting the newlyweds.

“As the founder of the Invictus Games, The Duke of Sussex has become a champion for war veterans around the world, including in Australia,” Turnbull said in a statement.

“His attendance, alongside The Duchess of Sussex, will be a wonderful highlight for the more than 500 competitors and thousands of spectators. I know the Australian people will greet Their Royal Highnesses with great warmth and excitement wherever they go during their time here.

“Lucy and I look forward to hosting their visit and watching the remarkable feats of Invictus athletes from around the world.”

Prince Harry created and is the patron of the Invictus Games Foundation, which runs the tournament, and has previously attended the games in other host cities.

Harry, who is a former veteran himself having completed two tours of Afghanistan, created the Paralympic-style games as a way to inspire wounded soldiers toward recovery.

The newlywed pair attended their first public engagement as a marriage couple in May, as they joined an array of other royals at Buckingham Palace for an early 70th birthday celebration for Prince Charles.

On Saturday, Harry and Meghan attended the annual Trooping the Colour parade in London. They shared a carriage from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade where they witnessed nearly 1,500 troops perform a military display as part of the official Queen’s birthday celebrations.

Later they joined the Queen, the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and other family members on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to watch the spectacular display in the skies above.
