‘Suited for Queen’: Writer’s intimate glimpse at Charles and Camilla’s marriage

She’s possibly one of the most controversial royals in history, but Camilla has now been praised for bringing the “sparkle” back to Prince Charles’ eye in an intimate magazine article, sharing an inside glimpse at the couple’s marriage like never before.

Having followed them on their royal tour through France and Greece, Vanity Fair writer James Reginato had the chance to watch the royal couple’s chemistry closely – and admitted after seeing how the Duchess of Cornwall engaged with everyone from fans to photographers, he believes she is “constitutionally suited to being Queen”.

He went on to speak to Harry and Meghan’s official wedding photographer, who described Charles and Camilla as like “a young couple in love”, while Camilla’s nephew even contributed and recalled their “genuine, deep-down affection and love”, painting a picture of a couple very much in love.

Photographer Alexi Lubomirski, who took Harry and Meghan’s official engagement and wedding pictures, has worked with the royals for years. This time he was invited along to take a series of stunning photos of Charles and Camilla for the magazine article.

From a black and white snap of the couple staring into each other’s eyes, to more of them strolling outside together and one of Camilla holding her hand on Charles’ leg, the photos show a softer, more natural side of the pair.

“As soon as they looked at each other, there was a sparkle in their eyes – that’s when the magic happened,” he said after photographing them together. “You feel like they are a young couple in love.”

Meanwhile, his thoughts were echoed by Camilla’s nephew Ben Elliot, who praised both of the royals individually and said their own attributes are only heightened when they are together.

“They enjoy each other’s company so much,” he added. “You can see it best when they are dancing together – such genuine, deep-down affection and love. They both get the giggles – she first, then he tries to hold it together.”

While she’s been slammed for years by members of the public – with many struggling to move on from Charles’ difficult divorce from Princess Diana – Camilla is held in very high esteem among newspaper journalists and photographers. Reginato described speaking to many members of the press corps about the duchess, with each giving their own glowing review of how she remembers their names and always looks them in the eye. They even praised her for making Charles “easier and happier”.

Surprisingly, one royal correspondent told the magazine that while Charles and Camilla are loved by all the royal press, the younger generation like William and Catherine can often be “control freaks” when it comes to their image and coverage.

“We think the world of her, we adore her,” Arthur Edwards, photographer of The Sun, added to the mag of Camilla. “She always shows up with a great smile and is never, ever, grumpy.”

Meanwhile, having watched Camilla day after day on the tour himself, Reginato insisted she was suited to sitting beside her husband when he becomes King, as Queen Consort, the title given to the spouse of a King or Queen.
