Meghan has revealed how she surprised her husband Prince Harry with an added touch to her wedding dress, while making her ‘something blue’ a moving nod to their first date together.

Opening up on some of the secrets behind her Givenchy gown in a rare and candid interview on new ITV documentary Queen Of The World, the Duchess of Sussex, 37, revealed she had a patch of fabric from the outfit she wore on her first date with Harry sewn in to the dress as her ‘something blue’.

She was speaking to a curator of the Royal Collection at Buckingham Palace, where her dress will now be displayed, and she responded to the new royal: “Oh, that’s about the most romantic thing I’ve heard.”

Elsewhere in the footage – shared on the royal family’s Instagram page – the duchess focused on her stunning 15ft wedding veil and admitted her choice to include embroidered floral decorations representing all 53 Commonwealth nations was a surprise for Harry.

She said: “[It was] a fun surprise for my now husband, who didn’t know, and he was really over the moon to find out that I would make this choice for our day together.”

Meghan added: “I think the other members of the family had a similar reaction, and just appreciation for the fact that we understand how important this is for us and the role that we play.”

The duchess’ decision mirrored that of the Queen for her Coronation gown in 1953, in a sweet nod to her husband’s grandmother on their special day.

The dress drew collective oos and ahhs around the world as Meghan stepped out of the car when she arrived at St George’s Chapel on May 19. Made from double-bonded silk cady, the gown featured six meticulously placed seams and an elegant boat neckline.

The new royal documentary takes a closer look at the royal family and the Queen’s record-breaking 66 years on the throne, showing intimate moments behind the scenes and exclusive chats with the highest-ranking members of the family.

As the film is Palace-approved, the documentary makers were given special access to the Monarch, her residence and her staff to learn more about her life as the world’s most high-profile royal.

The Queen of the World executive producer Nicholas Kent said the documentary will show the world just how hard the Queen still works and how much she dedicates to the Commonwealth.

“The Queen is the most well-travelled monarch in history and it’s been fascinating to see how she has passed on her experience to the younger generations of the royal family. With the Duke and Duchess of Sussex about to embark on their first Commonwealth Tour to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific exactly sixty-five years after the Queen’s first Commonwealth Tour, this series could not be more timely.”

Queen of the World premieres September 25 on ITV and October 1 on HBO. It’s set to air in Australia on Channel Seven soon after.
