Fans of Meghan Markle have launched a huge online debate after a video went viral showing her chatting to fans – with what many claim is a new accent.

The former US Suits actress has been living with her now-husband Prince Harry in England since last year, and has spent much of her time since then with members of the royal family.

So it would hardly be a surprise if she had picked up some of their sayings and even a hint of their accent.

Now, a video taken by a fan and shared on Twitter has begun doing the rounds, with many fans claiming she’s speaking with “posher” tones. In fact, some claim she’s on the way to adopting a British accent, and dropping her American roots for good.

The video was taken by Aya El Zeiny and shows the 36-year-old Duchess of Sussex greeting fans on her first major solo engagement with the Queen in Cheshire last month.

As she reaches Aya, she asks her name and enjoys a short chat with her, thanking her for her support before moving on to tell someone close by: “We all had a great day, I think.”

When another woman told her she looked “gorgeous” at her wedding, Meghan added: “The sun was shining for us.”

Her voice is undoubtedly slightly different, but while many fans insist she’s just picked up slightly “posher” tones following months with Prince Harry, others believe she’s on the way to becoming British.

“I just watched a video that showed Meghan Markle starting to have a British accent and I’m so here for it you have no idea,” one fan wrote. Another added: “She’s developing an accent. I’m jealous.”

And one more wrote: “She picked up the accent quickly.”

Others didn’t agree, as one fan added: “English accent they say…it’s a well traveled American accent.”

And one wrote: “I didn’t hear an accent?” A few others speculated whether the accent was put on, however more insisted it’s very normal to pick up a new accent quickly when you move abroad.

Defending her, another fan tweeted: “I don’t understand why it’s a big deal if Meghan Markle develops a British accent… 1. She’s married to one. 2. She’s an actress and has probably taken lessons in accents. And 3. It’s a subconscious form of empathy.”

It sparked a reaction from the professionals, and Dennis Preston, a regents professor of linguistics at Oklahoma State University, told Yahoo Lifestyle he didn’t hear any accent at all.

“I did a very careful listen, paying specific attention to her vowels, a big giveaway with British accents, as well as the intonation. I just didn’t find anything resembling a British accent,” he told the news outlet. “There’s nothing there.”

So what do you think? Can you hear any hint of a British accent?
