Meghan Markle is set to marry Prince Harry in a matter of weeks, in one of the most eagerly anticipated royal weddings in years. But her angry and estranged half-brother has now made a bitter attempt to end the romance, by calling on Harry to call off the May 19 nuptials in a scathing open letter – insisting it’s “not too late”.

Thomas Markle Jr, branded his 36-year-old actress sister a “jaded, shallow, conceited woman that will make a joke of you and the royal family heritage” in the shocking letter, published by InTouch magazine.

“As more time passes to your royal wedding, it became very clear that this is the biggest mistake in royal wedding history,” the letter read. “Meghan Markle is obviously not the right woman for you.

“I’m confused why you don’t see the real Meghan that the whole world now sees. Meghan’s attempt to act the part of a princess like a below C average Hollywood actress is getting old.”

He goes on to make a series of sensational claims, including that their father is now in debt after funding Meghan’s lifestyle during her earlier acting career. He even blames her for losing contact with her father, and hit out at her alleged decision not to have him walk her down the aisle.

“What kind of person starts out by using her own father until he’s bankrupt, then forgets about him in Mexico leaving him broke, over mostly all her debts,” the letter added.

He concluded: “You would think that a royal wedding would bring a torn family closer together, but I guess we’re all distant family to Meg.”

It’s not the first time Thomas has spoken out against his estranged sister, and he previously accused her of tearing their family apart. He even told the Daily Mirror: “She is giving the greatest performance of her life.”

The pair aren’t thought to have seen each other since their grandmother’s funeral in 2011. While Meghan has remained close to her mum, she is thought to be distant from her father and siblings, all of whom seem intent on ruining her and Harry’s special day.

It’s not uncommon for weddings to bring family demons out of the closet, but when they’re playing out in front of the world it adds a whole new layer of complexity. Meghan and Harry have faced a steady stream of abuse since announcing their engagement, with the actress subjected to vile online abuse about her mixed-race heritage and her family’s constant attempts to cash in on her fame.

Anyone’s who’s organised a wedding knows that bringing two families together isn’t always a smooth process. Strained relationships, the stress of spending a significant sum of money and clashes of opinions make weddings a breeding ground to drama and tension. Unfortunately for Harry and Meghan, their difficulties are being played out in front of the world’s media with no end in sight.
