While Australians have been warned they may spot a snake or two in backyards, schools, shopping centres and homes in spring as breeding season kicks off, the last place you expect to come across one is in your bedroom.

But one Queensland mother got the fright of her life when she spotted a slippery serpent in her daughter’s bed – and it’s almost impossible to spot it at first glance.

In a Facebook video, Toowoomba Snake Catchers 24/7 explained they were called out to a home in Toowoomba’s Darling Heights suburb after a carpet python made itself right at home under a pillow in a bed.

“Imagine waking up next to this lovely guy, a beautiful carpet python,” the post joked.

According to a report by 7 News, the snake catchers were called to the family home after a mother discovered the snake in her daughter’s bedroom. The mother was cleaning the room and making the bed when she noticed the reptile out the corner of her eye.

The terrified pair managed to keep a close eye on the snake as they called immediately for snake catchers to remove it.

“It’s made its way from on the floor under the bed to across the bed on her pillow,” snake catcher Ally Wilkinson told 7 News.

The snake in question is believed to be a few years old, although it’s still not known how it made its way into the bedroom. Wilkinson said it could have climbed in the home through the drainage system or made its way into the house through an air conditioning unit.

In the video, a snake catcher could be seen bravely marching up to the bed and picking the snake up by its tail as it tried to slither away. Australians are being urged to contact professionals if they spot a snake to prevent the risk of injury to humans, their pets and the snake.

It’s not the first time a snake story has made headlines recently. Earlier this month, a pair of snakes in combat fell through the roof of a Brisbane home after they were competing for the chance to mate with a nearby female.

Shared on the Snake Catchers Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan and Gold Coast Facebook page, the two snakes could be seen wrestling with each other inside the bedroom of a home.

In that video, the snakes were heard hissing at each other, while the catcher confirmed they could battle for hours until one was exhausted.

Have you spotted a snake this year? How do you protect yourself and your home against them?
