Hollywood actor Will Ferrell has been rushed to hospital following a serious car accident in America.

In an exclusive report by TMZ, the 50-year-old star was caught up in a two-car crash in California. Ferrell was one of three passengers in a chauffeur-driven SUV, when it was struck on the side by another vehicle.

It is unknown what injuries the Step Brothers actor suffered, but footage released online showed him being assisted by firefighters on the side of the road.

It is thought that he suffered minor injuries and he was taken to hospital as a precaution. The report states that the driver of the other vehicle was also taken to hospital, while another passenger in Ferrell’s car is suffering from major injuries.

The SUV that Ferrell was riding in was flipped during the accident and beer bottles were spotted at the scene. According to the report, police are yet to confirm or deny whether alcohol played a role in the accident.

Ferrell was on his way home from an event near San Diego, where he met fans dressed as his famous Anchorman character, Ron Burgundy. His manager later confirmed to Deadline that Ferrell had been discharged from hospital and was “doing well” following the accident.

Ferrell’s manager also told Deadline that the driver of the other vehicle had fallen asleep at the wheel, causing her to crash into the SUV, which resulted in it flipping. TMZ released the emergency audio from the accident, which occurred around 11pm on Thursday evening.

Ferrell recently made headlines in Australia when he crashed an interview with Roger Federer at the Australian Open in January. The sportsman struggled to contain his laughter as he was quizzed about everything from his “ageless” appearance to his “gazelle-like” playing by the actor.

Ferrell is one of Hollywood’s most successful comedy actors. In addition to his string of successful hit movies, he continues to appear regularly on Saturday Night Live and has two movies set for release in 2018. The first, Zeroville, is about a young actor who arrives in Hollywood in the 1960s, while the second, Holmes and Watson, is said to be a humorous take on the Sherlock Holmes series.

Fans have flooded social media with well-wishes for their idol.

One person wrote: “My heart just dropped in my stomach. I can’t imagine life without a new Will Ferrell movie to look forward to every year”.
