It’s not every day you get to meet a prince and wildlife warrior Robert Irwin made sure he left his mark when he met Prince Charles during the royal’s trip Down Under for the Commonwealth Games earlier this year.

Charles is gifted with plenty of presents and keepsakes on his journeys around the world, but he’s unlikely to forget Robert’s personalised gift anytime soon. The 14-year-old gave Charles a giant canvas print of a gorgeous photo he’d taken of a turtle – and if it’s anything like his other pictures, the royal will want to find a primo spot to hang it on his wall at home.

Robert, his mum Terri and sister Bindi, met Charles in April at the Great Barrier Reef to talk about the World Heritage listed area and the work being done to conserve the coral and sea life.

“I gifted him one of my photography canvases of a turtle that was taken from the Great Barrier Reef which he really enjoyed, it was a great honour for me,” he said.

Prince Charles is known across the world for his wildlife advocacy and over the course of the year has spoken out twice about the threat of climate change and the damage it could do to the Great Barrier Reef. He is also Patron of the Australian Wildlife Conservancy and President of WWF-UK.

Thrilled to have had the opportunity to meet with Prince Charles, Robert commended him for his conservation work and passion for wildlife.

“He was amazing, he is such a kind person, he is really passionate about everything wildlife, conservation, all of that,” the mature young man said.

“He really is one of the most influential conservation voices on the planet. For us it was a real privilege to talk to him.”

Although he is often seen on US talk shows, Robert’s real love is Australia and recently he shared in an emotional moment to honour his father, who instilled that passion for Aussie wildlife in Robert from a young age.

Travelling to LA with his mum and sister, he stood by as his late father Steve – who sadly lost his life to a stingray injury in 2006 – received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

“It was really an emotional moment, it was such a special day, it was really the best way to honour dad’s amazing legacy. What better way for people to remember him than to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? We were really, really thrilled,” he revealed on the breakfast show.

“We were kind of overwhelmed with emotion, we didn’t realise how many people were going to show up, the whole street, everyone was dressed in khaki, everyone was so excited, it was such a great day. It will really remember that for the rest of my life.”
