Your quick and handy guide to packing smart for caravanning

Australia is made for road-tripping — wide open skies, winding coastlines, and the call of the outback. No wonder so many of us are packing up the caravan or campervan and heading off as proud Grey Nomads.

But before you load every cupboard with “just in case” items, here’s how to pack smart, travel light and make life on the road a breeze.

Start with the golden rule: Less is more

It’s tempting to bring everything you might need—but you’ll enjoy the journey more with less to lug, clean and find space for. Most seasoned travellers agree: you don’t need as much as you think!

Ask yourself:

  • Will I use this at least once a week?
  • Is there a smaller or multi-purpose version?
  • Can I buy or borrow it on the road if I really need it?

The essentials (that actually fit in your storage spaces)

Here are the tried-and-true items seasoned nomads swear by:

Clothing

  • A few lightweight layers (think “mix and match”)
  • One good warm jacket
  • Easy-wash, quick-dry fabrics
  • A hat for sun and a hat for warmth.

Kitchen Kit

  • Stackable containers with lids
  • A compact electric frying pan or air fryer
  • Reusable coffee cups & drink bottles
  • Two of everything: mugs, plates, cutlery.

Bits & Bobs

  • Torch/headlamp
  • Extension cords and power board
  • First aid kit (and your meds)
  • Fold-up chairs and a small outdoor table for those sunset dinners.

Packing tricks, DIY essentials and tech tools you may need

There’s a few packing tricks you may or may not know that could mean the difference between a well-organised caravan and a messy one:

  • Use packing cubes or labelled tubs. It makes life so much easier when everything has a place.
  • Get some vacuum storage bags. Perfect for extra bedding or winter clothes you don’t always need.
  • Keep a “grab bag” ready. One small backpack with your daily essentials (sunscreen, snacks, water, camera, hat) for sightseeing.

Make sure to bring some DIY repair tools and components as well. A few basics can save you a trip to the next town:

  • Duct tape (the traveller’s best friend!)
  • Zip ties
  • A multi-tool
  • Basic spanners and screwdrivers
  • WD-40 (because something will squeak)

Finally, technology may just become your best friend for the duration of your journey. Download shows, music or audiobooks before heading into remote areas with patchy reception so that you can keep yourself entertained if need be. Other essentials include:

  • GPS or maps app (offline ones are handy in remote areas)
  • Caravan park apps (like WikiCamps or CamperMate)
  • Power bank or solar charger
  • eReader or tablet for books, news, and video chats with the grandkids

Whether you’re heading up the coast, inland to the red dust, or anywhere in between: remember to travel light, travel well and savour the journey.
