Walk into any skincare aisle today and one word appears repeatedly: actives. Serums and creams promise brighter skin, smoother texture, fewer lines and improved hydration, all thanks to ingredients that do more than simply moisturise the surface.

Active ingredients are compounds designed to change how the skin functions, whether that means stimulating collagen production, encouraging cell turnover, improving hydration levels or protecting the skin from environmental damage.

For women over 50, these ingredients can be particularly valuable. As oestrogen levels decline, collagen production slows, the skin barrier weakens and natural moisture levels drop. These changes can lead to increased dryness, reduced elasticity and dullness. The right active ingredients can help support the skin through these shifts by improving hydration, encouraging renewal and strengthening the barrier.

The key is knowing how to introduce and layer them. Using too many actives at once can overwhelm the skin, while a thoughtful routine allows each ingredient to perform effectively.

Hyaluronic acid is often the easiest place to begin. It works as a humectant, meaning it draws water into the skin and helps maintain hydration. Because it is gentle, it can usually be used morning and night.

Vitamin C is best applied in the morning. It acts as an antioxidant, helping protect the skin from environmental stress while also brightening tone and supporting collagen production.

Retinol is one of the most researched skincare ingredients available. It helps stimulate cell turnover and collagen production, which can gradually improve skin firmness and texture. Because it is powerful, it is usually introduced two to three nights a week, gradually increasing as the skin adjusts.

Here are some of my favourite products that highlight these active ingredients particularly well.

Retinol: Roc Derm Correxion Serum Stick and Lip Volumizer
Price $59.99 (Serum Stick) Buy here.
Price $52.99 (Lip Volumizer) Buy here

The Derm Correxion Serum Stick offers a convenient way to apply retinol precisely where it is needed, particularly along the jawline, neck and areas that are prone to loss of firmness. The stick format makes application simple and the texture glides smoothly onto the skin. The Lip Volumizer is a particularly interesting addition to the range. After using it consistently I noticed my lips looked noticeably fuller and smoother without needing cosmetic treatments. It is an easy way to add a little definition and hydration to the lip area while still benefiting from retinol-based technology.

Hyaluronic Acid: Eaoron Essence and Moisturising Cream
Price $23.99 (Essence) Buy here
Price $28.99 (Cream) Buy here

The Eaoron Hyaluronic Acid Essence delivers lightweight hydration that sinks quickly into the skin, while the accompanying moisturising cream helps seal that hydration in. Used together they create a simple layering routine that works morning and evening. For skin that often feels tight or dehydrated, this combination provides immediate comfort and helps maintain hydration levels throughout the day.

Vitamin C: Ella Baché NeoBright Correcting Serum

This serum focuses on brightening and correcting uneven tone using Kakadu plum, which is recognised as one of the richest natural sources of Vitamin C. Vitamin C plays an important role in supporting collagen production, improving radiance and protecting the skin from environmental stress. The formulation also includes hydrating ingredients that help maintain moisture while improving skin clarity. It has a lightweight texture that layers easily under moisturiser and sunscreen, making it well suited to morning use.

Vitamin C: SkinForme Elite C
Price $172.50

This serum has a beautiful texture that absorbs easily without feeling heavy. I really enjoy using this one and noticed a visible improvement in overall radiance within a few days. Skin appears clearer and more luminous, which is often one of the first signs that a well-formulated Vitamin C serum is working effectively.

Vitamin C: Omorfi Brightening & Repairing Vitamin C Serum
Price $69.95

This serum uses ascorbic acid, a potent form of Vitamin C, combined with hydrating ingredients like glycerin to help improve skin tone while maintaining moisture levels. Vitamin C works by helping to reduce melanin production, which can gradually improve the appearance of pigmentation and dullness.  It layers easily into a morning routine and can even be mixed with moisturiser if you prefer a softer application. With regular use, Vitamin C formulations like this can help skin look brighter, smoother and more even over time.

Active ingredients do not need to complicate a routine. In fact, the most effective skincare often relies on just a few well-chosen ingredients used consistently.
Hyaluronic acid helps maintain hydration.

Vitamin C brightens and protects during the day.

Retinol supports renewal and firmness overnight.

When layered thoughtfully and introduced gradually, these ingredients can significantly improve the way skin looks and feels over time. Consistency is usually far more important than intensity.
