Television memories from my childhood

One of my favorite shows portraying the 60s was Mad Men. Although I wasn’t wild about the overt sexism on the show, I was still addicted to every episode.

Such a time that was. Each week we witnessed big boobs, tight skirts and strong martinis. The incessant cigarettes nostalgically reminded me of my mother. And Elizabeth Moss!

Part of my attraction to the show was that I had worked in advertising for nearly twenty years, and watching it brought back many memories. In the 60s, I wasn’t scraping for a job. I didn’t have bills to pay. My cats weren’t barfing on the carpet.

Life was easier.

But growing up, our family watched other shows. We were often crammed around our TV in Studio City, watching Walter Cronkite, My Three Sons, and Lassie.

Sometimes we’d squint, trying to get as close to the television as possible, mesmerized by those black and white commercials telling us to buy this or that.

When color TVs came out, my twin sister and I would go down to the boulevard and stare through the department store windows, chewing our Bazooka bubble gum.

Every product advertised was enticing. To this day, those jingles are as clear as they were back then. For those who grew up during the 50s and 60s, perhaps you’ll recall a few of these slogans.

Can you fill in the blanks? Or make up an answer of your own!

What commercials do you remember? Is there a jingle that still rings in your head?
