Are you reading this blog on the Internet today? Guess we all are, due to the massive reinvention of the digital world. This has definitely impacted many seniors of our age. Our world has changed, and will continue to progress for each age group ahead.

Access to the Internet from a desktop to a laptop, to an Ipad to a smart phone has opened windows to the world for many first-world folk in this technological era. We are all powered up in some ways, always adapting our senior brains to try to master new devices. We could say more often, “Power to the greys!”

There are many wonderful ways of communicating in these modern formats, such as sharing on social media, or making best use of smart home appliances and apps to make life easier. For instance, some senior-specific devices have voice recognition, and sensors in case of falls or medical mishaps at home or in assisted living. Smart upgrades such as pillboxes and glasses can enable the boomers to continue to live independently as long as they can.

Personally, I love my browsing, but can waste some time reading online skill sharing, such as good ideas for recipes, or how to adapt some craft patterns online. Being old style, I do transcribe a Youtube demo, then type it in larger print, because I still prefer written formats.

There are many online communities, whatever the individual wishes to share, such as creative writing, or beliefs, or cross-cultural experiences. Studying online can be free or cost a fee, depends on what is available. I have studied online and gained a Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. I have since retired from tutoring, finally, but still maintain what is now known as a micro-business, occasionally writing Resumes and Cover Letters for any online client. My advertisement online is free, so the overheads are minimal. Nothing too proactive.

There are other more entertaining websites for any age. For example, online puzzles, and even online gaming, which can be very engaging. Instead of joining in local Bingo, the modern day senior can be fully occupied doing ‘other things’. In other words, their latest project is online gaming. The gal pals on Facebook do hope that we can develop the wisdom to decide if we wish to play card games with friends, or if it is a scam. Yes, the digital world has provided an open field for scammers to target any age group, so we must take all caution if approached, either on social media, on our phones, or via email. This is virtual reality, and it is here right now.

If people of our tender age do wish to be active, the online digital world can be a link for trying new activities, at home, such as steps in Yoga, or a dance challenge. Seniors can see if this suits them, before joining in real world community groups for fun. We can adapt to sports and exercises, have a quiet chuckle, and experience active ageing to improve our wellbeing. We are awake, alive, breathing and alert, or let’s hope so. At our age, active ageing means motion is lotion.

Staying socially connected online can also bring the benefits of information about great ideas for travel experiences. Senior gypsies can join group tours or cruises, or travel as couples, or aim for solo travelling. Being immersed in other cultures can make unforgettable happy souvenirs and photos to share when grey nomads are glad to arrive home. So many things are done online now, in all facets of life. The smart phone has changed the world, I am sure mine has an independent brain of its own. If there are digital glitchesto be had, I am right here. Goodness only shall know what the young ones will invent for the greys next. More hi-tech savvy to get our ageing brains around. In the meantime, let’s power up the greys!
