Brisbane is known for many things, like its sunny lifestyle and colonial timber houses, but now it can lay claim to making the best donuts in the country.

That was the official word from the Baking Industry Trade Show, who awarded its top awards to a Brisbane donut company against a nation wide field.

OMG! Decadent Donuts said they were “beyond thrilled” to receive the honour, explaining that they won a “clean sweep” at the prestigious Baking Association of Australia (BAA) Excellence in Baking Awards.

The Spicy Ranga, a mixture of ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, cardamom, and cloves, won gold in the Best Gourmet Donut category.

The Dusty Queen, an orange and cinnamon concoction claimed Silver in the same category and was followed by the Bronze-winning Coffee Coffee Yum Yum.

OMG! shared the news of their triumph on Instagram and explained that the judges had no idea their award-winning donuts were gluten-free, nut-free and vegan.

“What makes this victory even sweeter? Our award-winning donuts are 100 per cent free from gluten, dairy, egg, wheat, yeast, nuts, and sulphites, and they triumphed in a blind tasting, over a field of ‘normal’ donuts,” they said.

Customers were just as excited for their win, with many congratulating the OMG! team on social media.

“This is very impressive, very well done,” one wrote.

“Best! News!! So deserving!!!”

“These have been the best for my son who is anaphylactic to egg dairy and peanuts and they are so bloody tasty too.”

It’s not just Australia’s best donut that has been crowned. Recently, a bakery in Victoria emerged as the champion of this year’s Baking Association of Australia’s (BAA) Best Pie and Pastie Competition with their unique submission.

Rolling Pin Pies and Cakes competed against more than 300 other bakeries, entering their submission for Australia’s Best Pie among over 2000 entries, ultimately securing the top spot with their prawn laksa pie.

Each bakery competing for the title of Australia’s best pie submitted three entries: one judged hot, another cold, and a third held in reserve for the final judging day if it earned a gold medal in its category.

The team at Rolling Pins Pies and Cakes couldn’t contain their excitement following the win, taking to social media to celebrate their victory and share the good news with their customers.

“Holy S$@t! We have just been judged Australia’s Best Pie for the 3rd time in 4 years,” they wrote.

“Over 2000 pies from 367 bakeries from all over the country were judged over 3 days…and at the end of it all our Prawn Laksa was judged the overall best in Oz!!!

“Wooooooohooooooo!

“We also won the Vegetarian Pastie category for the 4th time with our Wholemeal Vegetarian (Vegan) pasitie.

“Best day ever!!!”

As news of their victory spread, pie lovers from near and far offered their congratulations with many keen to try the award winning creation for themselves.
