‘Tough to beat’: Matildas’ quarter-finals opponents revealed

Following their triumphant 2-0 win against Denmark, the Matildas are currently gearing up for a thrilling quarter-finals showdown against their newly confirmed opponent, France.

After Round 16 drew to a close, France advanced to the quarter-finals with an impressive 4-0 win over Morocco and will now face off against the Aussies on Saturday, August 12 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

A previous friendly match brought the two teams face to face with the Matildas securing a 1-0 victory at the time.

Although the Matildas have defeated France before, the Australians will need to bring their A-game on Saturday night given the absolute trouncing France delivered to Morocco.

In a truly impressive display, France scored an impressive three times in eight minutes, essentially securing their spot in the quarter-finals in a mere 23 minutes.

While France will no doubt be a tough opponent, fans across the nation rallied to offer their support to the Matildas as they prepare for their next make-or-break match.

In front of a 75,784-strong crowd at Accor Stadium on Monday, August 7, Australia secured victory over Denmark with the home side securing an early lead after Caitlin Foord scored in the 29th minute.

Despite some intense pressure from Denmark, the Matildas were able to hang on to their lead into half-time, finishing the half 1-0.

Denmark’s fate was set in the 69th minute when Hayley Raso secured her team’s second goal for the night bringing the score to 2-0.

Prior to their match against Denmark, the Matildas dominated Canada with an outstanding 4-0 triumph in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium on Monday, July 31st.

The remarkable victory not only propelled them to Round 16 but also etched their name in history as they secured the top spot in their group for the first time in the World Cup.
