In an incredible moment for soccer enthusiasts across Australia, the Matildas have emerged victorious against Denmark, securing their spot in the World Cup quarter-finals.

In front of a 75,784-strong crowd at Accor Stadium on Monday, August 7, Australia secured a 2-0 win over Denmark with the home side securing an early lead after Caitlin Foord scored in the 29th minute.

Despite some intense pressure from Denmark, the Matildas were able to hang on to their lead into half-time, finishing the half 1-0.

Although Denmark dominated the ball early in the second half, the Matildas’ defence was unforgiving and made it difficult for their opponents to create scoring opportunities.

Denmark’s fate was set in the 69th minute when Hayley Raso secured her team’s second goal for the night bringing the score to 2-0.

Much to the delight of the home crowd, captain Sam Kerr returned to the field in the 79th minute after sitting out previous matches due to injury.

Although Kerr only played for 15 minutes of the match, she came close to adding to Australia’s lead with an attempt at goal that was ultimately unsuccessful.

Following the match, Kerr revealed that it felt “amazing” to join her team on the field once again.

“The girls have been absolutely smashing it the last few games and joining them on the pitch finally after they’ve been doing all the work, it was an amazing feeling for me,” she told Optus Sport.

“It (the reception) is obviously amazing and makes me feel really good, but Australia has really taken us on as one of their favourite teams.”

Reflecting on the win, Head Coach Tony Gustavsson praised his team’s ability to remain composed despite constant pressure from Denmark.

“The players managed once again to play the game in front of us,” he told reporters.

“We didn’t get rattled, the team is very matured in playing tournament football and finding a way to win.”

While Foord revealed that she believes the Matildas can “beat anyone” following their recent performance.

“It was awesome,” she said.

“If we play like that, I’m confident we can beat anyone”

After the full-time whistle blew, social media erupted with messages of praise as fans came together to celebrate the incredible achievement.

The Matildas will next face off against France or Morocco in their quarter-final match on Saturday, August 12.
