He’s got style, he’s got grace, he’s a winner.
He’s the incomparable Sir Tom Jones, who has probably met everyone who’s anyone in show business. After all, the Welsh baritone, nicknamed “tiger” by his adoring female fans, has sold over 100 million records and released multiple top 40 hits worldwide.
Described as a musical shapeshifter, the 84 year old singer has enjoyed success in multiple genres from soul, dance, R&B to country and gospel and parlayed his initial success as a star of the “British Invasion” to a decades-long career as a crooner in Las Vegas.
Over time, he became friends with his idol, Elvis Presley and got to know Frank Sinatra, not a small matter for English rock musician Gavin Rossdale, who was interviewing Jones for his podcast, Dinner with Gavin Rossdale.
During a recent episode, the Delilah singer shared how he got to know Sinatra and revealed a surprising anecdote about “Ol’ Blue Eyes” and his infamous drinking habits.
“Frank was Frank. Frank would sit here and he was a, I drank with him a few times in the Galleria bar in Las Vegas and he was one of those guys,” Jones said.
“As where Elvis would be up in the suite, in the international suite, so if you wanted to see Elvis, if you were allowed to see Elvis he would be up in his suite.
“Whereas Frank was, he’d have a bodyguard around him, in the casino, bar.”
Guest and host then chatted about Sinatra’s infamous alcohol consumption, Jones revealing what Sinatra told him about his favourite tipple.
“He had his hand upon the glass and I said ‘so you always drink Jack and coke,’ and he said ‘Well Tom, I hurt my hand when I was younger’,” Jones said.
“And he said ‘the only reason I drink is the ice is in there and it’s cold and it keeps my hand cold’ and I said ‘are you serious?’.
“And he looks at me and goes ‘yeah…’ but it was all to do with his hand he said, but he was a great character.”
Like Sinatra, many would argue Jones is also a great character, and he’d probably make a fine living sharing these entertaining stories from his glory days. But rather than slowing down, the legendary singer refuses to retire. He’s still going strong with an active career on stage.
Though, it’s hard for him to believe. Jones recently admitted that he is surprised by how well he can still sing.
“When I am singing I am like, ‘How the hell is this coming out of me?’ Honestly,” he told The Mirror.
“If the voice was not there I am sure I would be going, ‘Urgh, I don’t want to do so many shows’ but I love it as the voice is still working!”
