It should have been a triumphant evening for Sir Elton John. The multiple award-winning singer-songwriter and piano player was there to see the culmination of months of work literally play out on the West End stage.

He was supposed to be watching the premiere of The Devil Wears Prada: A New Musical, which he had proudly scored the music for.

Although the 77-year-old initially appeared on stage at the start of the show, he had to leave mid-way through and was led out of the Dominion Theatre by husband David Furnish.

It was then the Crocodile Rock singer confessed that has lost his eyesight and could not enjoy the musical.

“As some of you may know, I have had issues and now I have lost my sight,” he admitted.

“I haven’t been able to see the performance but I have enjoyed it.

“To my husband who’s been my rock because I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews.

“It’s hard for me to see it but I love to hear it and it sounded good tonight. Thank you for coming.”

Rubbing salt into the wounds, the event was also a charity gala to support his eponymous Elton John AIDS Foundation, which tackles HIV stigma and supports direct care for those affected.

It was a shocking admission by the music legend who had previously joked about his health woes.

In September the legendary singer revealed that he has been left with “only limited vision” after dealing with a “severe eye infection”.

Recently, the Tiny Dancer hitmaker joked that “there’s not much of me left” while attending the New York Film Festival premiere of Elton John: Never Too Late.

“To be honest with you, there’s not much of me left. I don’t have tonsils, adenoids or an appendix. I don’t have a prostate,” he told the crowd, as per People magazine.

“I don’t have a right hip or a left knee or a right knee. In fact, the only thing left to me is my left hip.

“But I’m still here. And I can’t thank you [enough], you’re the people that made me.

“I want to thank David and Zachary and Elijah for making me the happiest man in the world.”
