Sarah ‘Fergie’ Ferguson knows a thing or two about being shunned by the British public and the royal family, and the ex-wife of Prince Andrew is now throwing her support behind Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, who’s been at the receiving end of harsh criticism since her explosive tell-all chat with Oprah Winfrey in March.

News broke last week that Meghan will soon be releasing her first children’s book, called The Bench, and it didn’t take long before the likes of commentators like Piers Morgan to launch scathing attacks against the former actress and her new business venture. In a column for the Daily Mail, titled “How the hell can Meghan ‘I hate royalty but call me Duchess’ Markle preach about father-child relationships when she’s disowned her own dad and wrecked her husband’s relationship with his?”, Piers described The Bench as being a perfect contender for the title of ‘World’s Most Ludicrously Inappropriate Book’.

Now an unlikely ally has come to Meghan’s defence: Fergie. The royal, who’s made quite the name for herself as a children’s book author over the last few years, told the Daily Mail that the duchess should be “supported and respected” for having the courage to write her own children’s book.

“To sit down and work hard to write a book, in any genre, should be supported and respected,” she said. “To encourage literacy in general, not just children’s books, is a love of mine and to encourage more women to delve into their creative selves and get a book out is very well done.”

It’s not the first time the Duchess of York has stood up for Meghan. In 2019, she weighed in on the negative publicity Meghan was facing at the time, telling Vogue Arabia, “It must be hard for Meghan, and I can relate to her”.

“I believe she is modern and fabulous. She was famous before. She is great. Why can’t Meghan be great? Why can’t she be celebrated? I have been in Meghan’s shoes, and I still am. There’s always a twist of negativity and it just gets so sad and tiring.”

While Fergie has faced her fair share of controversy over the years, she’s remained close with some members of the royal family, including her nephew Prince Harry, who’s known to be close to Fergie’s daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.
