If you’ve exhausted all of your usual go-to recipes and are looking for something tasty to cook up for your family, why not give this super simple – and royal-approved – recipe a try!

Cheesy Baked Eggs is said to be one of Prince Charles’ personal favourite dishes, and the heir to the British throne shared the recipe – which uses a host of pantry staples – on Monday in support of British cheesemakers who are struggling amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

“One thing that undoubtedly brings many of us great comfort is good food,” the Prince of Wales said. “It is, therefore, deeply troubling to learn that this crisis risks destroying one of the most wonderful joys in life – British cheese!”

Prince Charles has been Patron of the Speciality Cheesemakers Association since 1993 and, in celebration of its annual British Cheese Weekender, the senior royal urged people to buy locally produced cheese in a bid to keep “these small businesses afloat during the prevailing crisis”. And in a bid to tempt people to buy and cook with more cheese, Clarence House also released the full recipe for Charles’ favourite Cheesy Baked Eggs on its official Instagram page.

  1. Butter a small ovenproof dish and line with wilted spinach, making a well in the centre. Then, place the tomatoes on top of the spinach.
  2. Dot the soft cheese around the dish, then add the torn basil leaves and any charcuterie at this point.
  3. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Next, crack the egg into the centre of the spinach, then pour the double cream over the egg – but take care not to split the yoke.
  5. Sprinkle the grated hard cheese on top, then bake in a hot oven (around 180 degrees celsius) for 8-10 minutes.
  6. Allow to cool slightly before serving – and enjoy!
