Prison guards foil plot to ‘take out’ Daniel Morcombe’s killer

Daniel's killer has become a target for his fellow inmates.

Prison guards have foiled a plot by inmates at the Wolston Correctional Centre to attack and kill Daniel Morcombe’s killer.

Peter Brett Cowan is serving a life sentence at the Brisbane protection prison for murdering the Sunshine Coast teenager in 2003.

Guards told Seven News they confronted the inmate who planned to take out Cowan, saying he ran away from staff and cut himself with a razor to keep them at bay.

Up to four prisoners were reportedly involved in the plot.

The failed attack is just the latest in a series of attempts on Cowan’s life since he entered the prison.

He was kept in isolation for the first two years of his sentence after it became clear his fellow inmates were itching to get their hands on him.

The jail reportedly goes into a full security lockdown every time he is moved throughout the facility, to ensure his safety.

Last August, he was attacked by a fellow inmate who threw boiling water over him before bashing him with a mop bucket.

He has become one of the country’s most reviled killers since he was convicted of Daniel’s murder, as well as indecent treatment of a child and interfering with a corpse.

The high-profile case has captivated the nation for years, largely thanks to Daniel’s parents, Bruce and Denise Morcombe, who worked tirelessly to find justice for their son.

After he was convicted over Daniel’s death, it was revealed that Cowan had a history of child sexual abuse crimes and had previously served jail time for his offences.
