A move to change the age rating of the classic children’s film Mary Poppins to a PG rating due to “discriminatory language” has drawn the ire of outspoken media personality Piers Morgan.

The alteration in the 1964 film’s rating came from The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), who identified a derogatory term historically used by white Europeans towards nomadic peoples in southern Africa.

In the film, it is employed in reference to chimney sweeps with soot-covered faces.

Taking aim at what he described as “woke lunatics”, Morgan launched a tirade on Twitter in opposition to the recent reclassification of the film and those who support it.

“Are there no depths the woke lunatics won’t plunge to suck the joy out of our lives?” he wrote.

“If you’re genuinely offended by Mary bloody Poppins, then I hereby order you to stay away from me for the rest of your natural life. I don’t want to catch your woke virus. Thanks.”

No number of spoonfuls of sugar could sweeten the discontent bubbling in the sea of people left frustrated by the decision, as hordes took to social media to pour out their anger.

In the face of widespread opposition, the BBFC staunchly stood by their decision, offering a robust defence.

“Most recently, the film was resubmitted to us in February 2024 for another theatrical re-release, and we reclassified it PG for discriminatory language,” a spokesperson stated.

“Mary Poppins (1964) includes two uses of the discriminatory term ‘hottentots’.

“While Mary Poppins has a historical context, the use of discriminatory language is not condemned, and ultimately exceeds our guidelines for acceptable language at U.

“We therefore classified the film PG for discriminatory language.”
