When Nicole Kidman last spoke to her mother, the Australian star was unaware it would be the last time they would ever speak together. Janelle Kidman was the matriarch of the Kidman clan and who, in Nicole’s words “shaped” and “guided” her into adulthood.
So when Janelle died in September, Kidman was left devastated by her death and rushed to leave the 81st Venice Film Festival early to be with her family in Australia. The Aussie star would later win the best actress gong, which was accepted by her Babygirl director Halina Reijn on her behalf.
The 57-year-old Moulin Rouge star sat down with CBS Sunday Morning in the US recently where she opened up about her mother’s death and how her family has been coping.
Janelle’s last words to her eldest daughter were to “take care of yourself.”
”The final words my mama said, which I didn’t know were going to be the final words, I was gonna get on a plane and go back and see her, and she said, ‘Maybe wait a minute, because you just need to take care of yourself right now Nicky,”‘ Kidman said on the program.
It’s advice the Aussie actress is trying to follow, as well as wisdom from her late grandmother.
“So I’m doing that more, and I say that to other people in the world. Particularly women. I think we tend not to care of ourselves. We take care of everybody else but the last person is here,” Kidman said.
”My grandmother left me with ‘be happy’ and my mother said ‘take care of yourself.”‘
Kidman learned of her mother’s death while attending the Venice Film Festival in Italy, where she was promoting her new movie Babygirl. The tragic news forced her to miss the event.
At the time, Kidman took to Instagram to thank her supporters, sharing her appreciation alongside three photos of her late mother: one solo portrait and two with Kidman and her sister, Antonia.
“My sister and I along with our family want to thank you for the outpouring of love and kindness we have felt this week,” she began.
“Every message we have received from those who loved and admired our Mother has meant more to us than we will ever be able to express. Thank you from our whole family for respecting our privacy as we take care of each other.”
