Superstar entertainer Dick Van Dyke knows a thing or two about living well and shows no signs of slowing down.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter’s podcast Award Chatter, the Mary Poppins star divulged his age-defying secrets as he reflected on his long career in radio, television and film.

While conceding he was not as fast as he used to be, the spritely 98-year-old said he still loved to swim and visited the gym three times per week.

“I’m only about five months from 99, so I find it the legs — I would tell everybody who’s getting old — get your legs together,” he said

“If you’re going to get around, you’re alright, and that’s what I’m working on.”

Van Dyke also dismissed rumours he was retiring and explained he was working on a new project, a possible one-man show.

“Well, I decided over all the years I’ve been in the business I’ve got a million stories,” he said.

Proving age is no barrier to achievement, Van Dyke made history recently when he became the oldest actor to win a Daytime Emmy award.

Van Dyke received the accolade for his guest performance as amnesiac Timothy Robicheaux on the long-running soap opera Days of Our Lives.

“I don’t believe this. I feel like a spy from nighttime television,” he said as he received the honour.

“I’m 98 years old. Can you believe it? This really tops off a lifetime of 80 years in the business. If I had known I would have lived this long I would’ve taken better care of myself.”

Van Dyke received a standing ovation as he took to the stage, accompanied by his wife, Arlene, who held the trophy for him.

“I brought this lady up because she was also on the show,” he told the audience.

“She played the cop who arrested me.”

Van Dyke has previously won four Primetime Emmys, including three in the 1960s for his classic comedy series The Dick Van Dyke Show.
