King Charles took a break from his royal duties this week to try his hand at American football, learning how to throw a football like a quarterback.
During a recent visit to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in north London, as part of a community event sponsored by the Premier League club and the NFL, the King got some throwing advice from Phoebe Schecter, captain of Britain’s women’s flag football team. It wasn’t long before the King gave it a go himself.
Efe Obada, a British-Nigerian defensive end who played for the Washington Commanders for the past three seasons, praised the King for getting “stuck in” and for having good energy on the day.
“His technique wasn’t immaculate, I wanted him to get a little closer to the target so he could get it in but he was having a great time and got a good reception,” Obada said.

It wasn’t just NFL stars who were full of praise for the King, fans from near and far were quick to commend Charles for his efforts.
“Love this! the king doesn’t take himself too seriously,” one wrote.
“Having a ball by the looks of it King Charles! Awe. So fun!”
“Love how he’s game to give it a try,” commented another.
“The way His Majesty the King did that is so smooth like even with eyes closed in the dark with hand tied it still would’ve been that perfect.”
The event no doubt provided some much-needed levity for King Charles as he continues his battle with cancer.
The King’s health concerns first came to light in early 2024 during a hospital stay for a procedure related to benign prostate enlargement.
Subsequent tests revealed the presence of cancer, prompting the King to commence a schedule of regular treatments.
While he was been able to return to public duties soon after his diagnosis and treatment, the number of engagements has been limited on medical advice.
Although King Charles’ cancer treatment is reported to be “moving in a positive direction”, the Monarch will continue therapy to manage his condition.
“His treatment has been moving in a positive direction and as a managed condition the treatment cycle will continue into next year,” a palace source revealed in 2024.
