Aussie rock icon Jimmy Barnes made a triumphant return to the stage, showcasing his remarkable recovery from open-heart surgery in a stellar performance at Bluesfest.

The Scottish-born singer underwent the surgery in December following complications from a bacterial infection that had affected his heart. But Barnes, known for his resilient spirit, defied the odds and took to the stage on Sunday evening to the delight of his fans.

Barnes kicked off his set with the classic hit Working Class Man, declaring to the crowd, “It’s good to be here. It’s good to be f***ing anywhere.”

Joined by fellow Bluesfest performers and some surprise guests, Barnes delivered an electrifying performance that left the crowd in awe. Guitar virtuoso Tommy Emmanuel and vocalist Josh Teskey were among those who joined Barnes on stage, adding to the spectacle.

But perhaps the highlight of the evening came when Barnes was joined by his Cold Chisel bandmate Ian Moss for a nostalgic trip down memory lane, performing iconic hits like When the War is Over, Khe Sanh, and Flame Trees.

Despite the spectacle and celebration, caution lingered as Barnes’ health remained a priority. A vigilant medical team accompanied him on stage, ensuring his well-being following the recent surgery.

Barnes’ triumphant comeback marks a significant milestone in his ongoing recovery journey, which began in late November last year, with a bout of bacterial pneumonia. Later he shocked fans with the revelation that he was set to undergo open-heart surgery after the infection spread.

“Unfortunately I got some bad news late yesterday … despite everyone’s best efforts the bacterial infection I’ve been battling over the last fortnight has apparently now spread to my heart,” he said at the time

“It’s infected an otherwise healthy valve that was replaced some years ago due to a congenital defect, so I’ll be getting open-heart surgery over the next few hours to clear out this infection and put in a clean valve.

“Obviously this is going to take me out of action for a while. I know lots of other people are battling even worse things but it still feels hugely frustrating.

“Just a few weeks ago I was the fittest I’ve been in decades!”

Defying concerns from fans, Barnes swiftly advanced in his recovery, consistently sharing encouraging updates.
