After more than three decades playing one of the most popular characters on Australian television, Lynne McGranger recently announced she would be bidding farewell to Summer Bay, planning to leave the hit drama series Home and Away later this year.

In a recent heartfelt statement announcing her departure, McGranger thanked her fans as she made the “bittersweet” announcement to step away from her much-loved role.

“After almost 33 years in my dream role and working everyday with people who I love, respect and whom I now consider family, it’s bittersweet to be closing the chapter on what has been the best and longest gig of my life,” McGranger said in a statement.

“I am forever grateful to the best production crew in the world and to our genius writers – whose doors are always open – for everything they have done for Irene over the past 33-odd years, and I am so proud of the storyline which will see Irene out of the Bay. Above all, a massive, heartfelt thank you to the fans for your continued love and support.”

While McGranger’s announcement sparked a wave of praise and well wishes from adoring fans, many were no doubt left wondering how McGranger’s beloved character Irene Roberts would exit the series.

Now during a recent chat with Nova 96.9’s Fitzy & Wippa with Kate Ritchie, McGranger teased what fans can expect in her final appearance.

“My initial thought was, maybe she can just get hit by a bus outside the diner,” she quipped, as per Woman’s Day.

“I had this idea, of what I think is a terrific storyline, and I went to the writers, and normally they’re like, ‘Oh, quick lock the door. Here she comes. Last time she came, she wanted Irene to get abducted by aliens…it’s not a valid storyline’.

“But this time they heard me out… I think it’s very, very pertinent, and I think people will travel the journey.”

McGranger, who has portrayed the iconic Irene Roberts for nearly 33 years, has become a staple of Summer Bay and is the longest-serving female actor in an Australian drama series.

McGranger joined the cast of Home and Away in 1993, and her character quickly became a fan favorite. Irene Roberts, a strong-willed, independent, and caring woman, resonated with viewers, and McGranger’s portrayal of the character earned her critical acclaim.
