Home and Away star Lynne McGranger delivers ‘bittersweet’ career announcement

After more than three decades playing one of the most popular characters on Australian television, Lynne McGranger will bid farewell to Summer Bay when she leaves the hit drama series Home and Away later this year.

McGranger, who has portrayed the iconic Irene Roberts for nearly 33 years, has become a staple of Summer Bay and is the longest-serving female actor in an Australian drama series. In a heartfelt statement, she thanked her fans as she made the “bittersweet” announcement to step away from her much-loved role.

“After almost 33 years in my dream role and working everyday with people who I love, respect and whom I now consider family, it’s bittersweet to be closing the chapter on what has been the best and longest gig of my life,” McGranger said in a statement.

“I am forever grateful to the best production crew in the world and to our genius writers – whose doors are always open – for everything they have done for Irene over the past 33-odd years, and I am so proud of the storyline which will see Irene out of the Bay. Above all, a massive, heartfelt thank you to the fans for your continued love and support.”

Fans and colleagues were quick to send their best wishes to McGranger, with many expressing how much they will miss seeing her in Summer Bay.

“Congratulations Lynne! Amazing person, amazing performer 🙌🏻 Absolute pleasure to work with you. What a legacy on such an amazing show! It won’t be the same without you,” one commented.

“I’m so excited for you and the next chapter Lynne!! You will be so deeply missed by everyone – on and off screen. You have been the heart of H&A. ❤️”

“All the best Lynne! Will miss hearing “Girlie” or another one of her catchphrases. Irene will remain and icon,” commented another.

“Oh my gosh! Absolutely massive news @lynnemcgranger, congratulations on all that you achieved. I’m so excited to see what’s next x.”

Home and Away’s Executive Producer, Julie McGauran, also shared her admiration for McGranger.

“What a pure joy and privilege it has been for all at Home and Away to work with the wonderfully talented, witty, funny and kind Lynne McGranger. Lynne’s extraordinary portrayal of down-to-earth Irene Roberts is why the character is held with such great affection by fans around the world,” she said.

“Lynne will always be a much-loved member of the Home and Away family, her friendship to all is truly cherished and we wish her all the best for what’s next in her bright, bright future.”

McGranger joined the cast of Home and Away in 1993, and her character quickly became a fan favorite. Irene Roberts, a strong-willed, independent, and caring woman, resonated with viewers, and McGranger’s portrayal of the character earned her critical acclaim.

Although McGranger will wrap up filming on Home and Away in May, she won’t be stepping away from the limelight completely. After enjoying some well-deserved downtime, she’ll hit the road again with the comedy-musical Grandparents Club as it tours across Australia.
