The Winter Olympics may have stunned the world this year, but it’s fair to say that no one can the shine off Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean.
The iconic ice skating duo, who have been a double act for more than 45 years, treated fans in the United Kingdom to a truly breathtaking routine on one of the country’s biggest shows.
Torvill, 60, and Dean, 59, are currently judges on Dancing on Ice, although the pair took centre stage on a recent episode to show the celebrity contestants how it’s done. The reality show made a triumphant comeback this year after being axed in 2014, with many praising Torvill and Dean’s place on the judging panel as part of the show’s success.
The famous couple wowed audiences at the Sarajevo Games in Yugoslavia in 1984, with their incredible Bolero routine. In January, the pair teased fans, explaining they were training to return to the ice.
In a video shared online, the world-famous athletes hinted that they’d be returning to the ice for the first time in more than four years. As part of their Dancing on Ice commitments, they’ll be joining the celebrity contestants for a tour of the UK.
Their new routine aired during the finale of the hit show, where they glammed up and wowed the audience. It was like no time had past since the 1984 games, with Dean effortlessly swinging Torvill over his shoulder and the pair skating in perfect unison around the rink to ‘Impossible Dream’.
Dean looked smart in an all-black suit and pant combo, while Torvill stunned in a sparkly blue number, complete with glittery snowflakes. At one point during the moving performance, Dean began swinging Torvill by her leg, to the cheers of the adoring fans who were lucky enough to witness the performance in person.
Fans at home couldn’t get enough of the routine, sharing their delight on Twitter. One fan wrote: “OMG! Wow! Loved their routine! It was so amazing to see them back on the ice. They are legend skaters. Love them!”
Another comment read: “To skate like you did tonight at 59 and 60 years old is just incredible,” while a third added: “It’s a shame you weren’t allowed to skate all series but it was fabulous watching you both skate tonight. You are as fantastic now as you’ve always been and it’s always such a pleasure to watch you both. Thank you xx”.
