Today Show co-host Ally Langdon has landed herself in the hospital after sustaining a leg injury while filming a stunt in Burleigh Heads, Queensland on Thursday afternoon. Ally was noticeably missing from Friday morning’s panel with Leila Mckinnon stepping in as a replacement alongside Karl Stefanovic.

Acknowledging the elephant in the room, Karl said Ally was “badly” injured after filming a water sports stunt for a segment that was due to appear on air. “She had a bit of an accident yesterday … she hurt herself really badly,” Karl explained. “She’s in hospital this morning.”

The clip then switched over to the dramatic footage of Ally, 41, floating on her back in the water before being dragged back to land by two men. She was then seen sitting on the jetty as Karl helped the injured host to remove her helmet.

The incident involved a hydrofoil board – a surfboard with a hydrofoil attached to its base that lifts the board out of the water as soon as it gains speed. The new-age boards have been under fire in the past with renowned surfer Jamie Mitchell writing on his Facebook page: “Foils are dangerous … very dangerous, and do not belong in the surf zone with the masses and general public.”

Ally’s replacement, Leila, went on to say she’d received a kind message from the host earlier that morning. “She messaged me this morning at 3am asking how I liked the alarm, so she still has the same, great spirit, but yeah doing it a bit tough. But she is a tough one.”

Karl finished off by saying the team would be in touch with Ally later on in the show to get the full story on what happened while she was in the water. Meanwhile, a Nine spokesperson told Starts at 60 that the host was expected to head back home to New South Wales following her injury.

“Ally hurt her leg after landing awkwardly during filming a story yesterday and was sent to hospital. She is expected to return home to Sydney over the weekend. We wish her well and a speedy recovery. We thank Leila McKinnon for taking a late-night call to join Karl for the Today at Burleigh Heads.”

Commenters on Facebook wished Ally all the best with one writing: “Best wishes for a speedy recovery Ally. Hope you’re back on the Today Show soon.” While another said: “Poor Ally. Hope your back on your feet super fast.”
