She’s celebrating her 54th birthday this week and Sonia Kruger has marked the occasion by sharing a very powerful message about dressing “age-appropriately”. The beloved presenter, who has been gracing our television screens for over two decades, is no stranger to embracing her incredible figure, often stepping out in glamorous dresses and skimpy outfits – and she’s not about to stop now.

In an open letter, written exclusively for 9Honey, the mother-of-one said she won’t be changing her dramatic style for anyone and refuses to conform to the “expected 50-plus dress code” – slamming so-called ‘age-appropriate’ fashion with the words: “What we wear as we age is a key indicator of whether we’ve submitted handmaid style to the expected 50-plus dress code.”

“We’re told to lose the minis, bikinis and Daisy Dukes,” Sonia added. “Instead, we’re encouraged to cover our upper arms and saggy knees, preferably with a sensible mid-length linen shirtdress and some statement jewellery. Over my dead, wrinkly, inappropriately-dressed body!”

The popular presenter then questioned why women should give up their sex appeal based on a number and what other people think, adding that the likes of Elle Macpherson, 55, Jennifer Lopez, 50, Robin Wright, 53, and Helen Mirren, 74, are still killing it when it comes to dressing sexy.

“Someone obviously forgot to tell Helen Mirren she’s not allowed to be hot anymore, because she’s still rocking it at 74,” she wrote. “I hope I am too at Helen’s age, when I’ll be 28 and 552 months and hopefully like her, still wearing a bikini.”

Sonia has in the past made it clear she’s not defined by age barriers, often posting glamorous snaps on social media that show off her statement style. Earlier this year, the presenter hit the red carpet at The Star Gold Coast for the star-studded Logies Awards and wowed crowds in a saucy gown.

Sonia took a night off from mum duties and stunned in the rainbow-hued metallic gown with a thigh split and dramatic one-shoulder detailing. The 54-year-old presenter accessorised with statement silver jewellery and wore her hair in tossed waves.

Many fans at the time praised Sonia’s fashion choice for the awards night, with one writing: “Sonia, you are a goddess.” Another added: “Can this human possibly be anymore amazing.” While a third wrote: “You always look amazing Sonia – the frock is fabulous.”

Meanwhile, Sonia’s comments comes after singing sensation Madonna caused quite the stir after she uploaded an image of herself earlier this month on social media wearing a tiny outfit. Madonna’s wardrobe has always divided opinion, from her boy toy belts and crucifixes to her famous cone bra and she shows no sign of giving up the shock factor in her seventh decade.

The singer, who turned 61 on August 16, posted a picture of herself getting ready to start her new Madame X tour in an ensemble that featured plenty of epaulettes but not much else. In the image, the singing legend posed with a drink in hand in the eye-catching military coat which she paired with very tiny shorts, leaving little to the imagination.

Most of her fans loved the snap, which references the all-theatre tour that’s scheduled to begin next month in New York City, but one follower did think that it was time the groundbreaking performer hung up her fishnets. “Maybe it’s time to start the process of aging gracefully. I’ve been there from the beginning and I love you, but it’s time,” one commentator wrote. Another added: “Happy Birthday!! But find the outfit distasteful and disrespectful.”

However, other fans praised the standout look, with one writing, “61 never [looked] better,” while another added: “I love this look.” Meanwhile, a third wrote: “Happy Birthday! Looking totally fabulous.”
