Television presenter Melissa Doyle has shed light on her departure from Seven last month after 25 years with the network, explaining how she felt “just really sad” when her time at the news desk came to an end.

The 50-year-old announced she was leaving Seven in August and now in her first interview since departing, revealed it “wasn’t a shock” to her when she found out she was leaving. Speaking exclusively to Stellar magazine this week, Doyle said she went through a range of emotions and did let herself wallow for a short time before she picked herself back up again and went on with life.

“I wouldn’t say it came as a total shock, I just felt really sad,” she told the publication. Adding with a laugh: “I let myself have one day when I wallowed on the couch and had a gin and tonic a little earlier than I should have.”

Over the years the well-known presenter held hosting roles on 11AM, Today Tonight, Sunrise, 7NEWS, Sunday Night and most recently The Latest. So, it certainly came as a surprise to her followers when she announced last month she would be leaving the network.

But, Doyle is not hanging onto any sadness and told Stellar magazine she’s excited about her future and grateful for what she was able to achieve throughout her career to date.

“I’ve had more opportunities than I could’ve imagined. I’ve covered more stories, been to more places and met more people than the 16-year-old girl who wanted to be a journalist could’ve dreamt of,” she said. “Nothing can take that away. I’m really grateful and I loved it.”

So now, after so long being in the spotlight, Doyle said she’s going to take it easy for a bit before launching into something new. She’ll spend time in her hosting role on Smoothfm and working on the seven-part audio documentary on women and ageing for Audible. But, most importantly, she’ll enjoy her time relaxing at home.

“I’m just going to keep going,” she told Stellar. “I’m lucky I can sit it out a bit, but it’s good to look forward. That’s a large part of mental health, otherwise you go down a rabbit hole and I don’t want to do that. The world will come back in time.”
