Elton John has reached out to fans with a heartwarming message, encouraging people to stick together during the tough times and ensuring everyone that “better days lie ahead”.

Playing host of the star-studded iHeart Living Room Concert for America, which was live-streamed via YouTube and featured performances by Mariah Carey, the Backstreet Boys and Lady Gaga, Elton kicked off the show with a heartwarming message for people affected by the coronavirus crisis that is currently unfolding.

He also praised those on the frontline for putting their lives at risk to save others.

“We’re taking care of each other, looking out for each other, doing what we can during this crisis,” he said. “There’s a lot of grief, uncertainty and fear, but let me tell you what’s going to keep us together — all the goodness that’s still happening in the world.

“Those doctors, nurses and scientists on the frontline, they’re living proof that most superheroes don’t wear capes. Families are finding ways to sing ‘happy birthday’ to loved ones, teachers are writing letters to their students; it’s inspiring. It shows that once we get through these tough times, better days lie ahead.”

Elton went on to explain why he and the other artists decided to come together for the concert, and said he hoped it would help bring a bit of joy to people’s lives during this difficult time.

“We’re glad you’re with us; we know that your concerns are a mile high and we hope this bit of entertainment can feed and fuel your soul and maybe renew some strength and a touch of joy to prepare for the days to come,” he said.

Pop stars including the likes of Sam Smith, Billie Eilish, Shawn Mendes all performed live-streamed performances from their homes. In between sets, Elton spoke about the ways communities are coming together to support each other, while also calling on people to support two of the many charitable organisations that are helping victims and first responders throughout the crisis.

The Crocodile Rock singer finished the show with a surprise performance on his son’s keyboard, singing ‘Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me’.

Fans have since praised Elton and the other performers, with many taking to social media to share their thanks amid the devastation.

“Such an amazing and uplifting night!” @angelaharris7 wrote on Twitter. “You reminded us how strong we are. Thank you Elton and iHeartRadio!”

“Thank you for raising awareness to help others in need during this crisis!” @Treesaka commented. “Such an amazing array of talented performers. [It] Warmed my heart!”

While @SUNsetHEAVEN59 added: “Incredible performances by all the artists! And a special TY to all first responders and those putting themselves in harms way at the health and hospital facilities. Tonight we were all together. Let’s be together tomorrow and make this a habit! Stay clean, safe, social distancing to all!”
