Bakery ‘stoked’ to claim the title of Australia’s best sausage roll

Sausage rolls, with their savoury filling and crisp, flaky pastry, are beloved by Australians, holding a special place in both their hearts and stomachs. Now, the best sausage roll in the country has been crowned after a bakery in Queensland claimed the top honour.

Kenilworth Bakery took out the top spot for their flavourful and flaky sausage roll as part of the Wotif’s 2024 Uniquely Aussie Awards.

The team at Kenilworth Bakery were “stoked” to have received the title of the country’s best sausage roll, taking to social media to celebrate their win.

“We’re stoked to announce that we’ve won Best Sausage Roll in the @wotifcom Uniquely Aussie Awards, and it’s all because of your votes!” the team wrote.

“We always thought our sausage roll was pretty awesome, and it looks like you agree!

“These beauties are hand-rolled, piped, and crafted fresh by our bakers daily—no shortcuts, just classic, delicious goodness. We sell thousands every week, and now they’re officially Australia’s favourite!

It’s not just the beloved sausage roll that is taking in awards, Banana Boogie Bakery recently elevated the classic vanilla slice to new heights, earning the title of Australia’s Best Vanilla Slice at this year’s Great Australian Vanilla Slice Triumph competition.

After evaluating taste, texture, and presentation, the judges awarded Banana Boogie’s vanilla slice the title of the country’s best.

The team at Banana Boogie Bakery could not have been happier with claiming the title, taking to social media to celebrate their win, stating “we f*&$ing did it”.

Ingredients

  • 600g standard beef sausages
  • ½ red onion, diced very finely
  • 2 tsp chopped fresh thyme, optional
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 5 sheets ready rolled puff pastry
  • 1 egg, beaten with a dash of water
  • ¼ cup plain flour

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C and line a baking tray with baking paper.
  2. Remove the outer skin from the sausages and throw them away.
  3. Mix together the finely chopped onion, sausage meat, thyme and salt in a large bowl.
  4. Fill a small bowl with water and place it next to a large chopping board.
  5. Place one sheet of puff pastry on the chopping board.
  6. Take around 75g of the meat mixture in your hand and roll it lightly your flour.
  7. Roll it into an even log and place it on top of the puff pastry; make sure it is just a couple of centimetres away from the edge of the pastry.
  8. Run some water around the edge of pastry with your finger and then begin to fold the pastry over the top of the meat; making sure you press the join down
  9. One it is tight, cut away the other half of the sheet and press along all the joins with the fork.
  10. Cut the log into 5 equal portions and jab two air holes on top with a knife.
  11. Place onto the baking tray and repeat with the rest of the sausage mixture.
  12. Once finished lightly brush the sausage rolls with egg.
  13. Place them in the oven and cook them for around 20 minutes until golden and cooked through.
  14. Stand for 5 minutes before serving.
