Fish and chips might be a favourite takeaway food worldwide, but it’s failed to make the cut here in Australia.

A new study by the country’s largest online food delivery website has looked at everything from Thai and Chinese, through to Italian, chicken and even kebabs to work out which food is favoured most among Aussies.

The results may surprise many, as Italian and pizza took the top spot according to Menulog’s research. In fact, there were more than four million pizza orders last year alone, with Indian and Thai taking the second and third spots.

The top categories continue to thrive, but newer foods like gourmet chicken, kebabs and ribs are growing fast in demand, the website found. There’s also been an increase in gluten-free foods, with more than one in 10 restaurants now offering the options on their menu.

For gluten intolerant customers, Asian food was found to be most popular, with green curry, Panang curry and Pad Thai proving the most mouth-watering dishes in the category. Meanwhile, showing there’s still a love for the unhealthy and delicious, fried chicken and ice cream both grew by 40 percent last year.

There’s been a noticeable shift in Aussies’ eating habits in recent years, as technology continues to develop offering more options for speedy and efficient takeaways.

The study also found that 87 percent of those asked admitted they liked to ditch social plans to stay home and have food delivered. While Friday and Saturday nights were once set aside for parties, social events and nights out, the research found more people are choosing to spend time with family at home instead.

Incredibly, more than 300 orders are processed every minute on the Menulog platform, all between 6pm and 7pm on Friday and Saturday nights.

It comes after Australian nutritionists Lee Holmes and Sophie Guidolin recently revealed the hidden health benefits and pitfalls of some of our takeaway foods to D’Marge.

Surprisingly, Sophie claims it’s a “misconception” that Italian and pizzas are bad for us. Instead, she recommends ordering smaller portion sizes where possible. She added: “Having a really nice comfort meal once a week is fine but if you’re choosing pasta order a tomato-based sauce rather than one that’s creamy.”

What is your favourite takeaway food? Do you enjoy a night in on a Friday or Saturday night?
