Australian breakfast television is facing another changing of the guard, with Sarah Abo announcing she will leave the Nine Network at the end of the year.
The Today co-host confirmed her departure today (Wednesday), bringing an end to almost four years on the breakfast program and continuing a remarkable period of change at one of Australian television’s most familiar shows. Abo joined Today alongside Karl Stefanovic in January 2023, replacing Allison Langdon after her move to A Current Affair.
Currently on maternity leave following the birth of her first child, Sonny, Abo said becoming a mother had opened a new chapter in her life.
“Words can’t express how grateful I am to our viewers for letting me into your homes to be part of your morning routine,” she said.
“Without you, there is no Today Show.”
Abo also reflected on her years at Nine, including her work with 60 Minutes, which took her around Australia and overseas.
“Becoming a mum has heralded a new chapter and sharing that with our audience has been truly special,” she said.
“As many of you know, this has been a significant journey for my family and will continue to be my greatest achievement.”
Abo’s departure is the latest in a series of exits that will leave Today looking considerably different in 2027.
Long-time host Karl Stefanovic left Nine in June after more than two decades with the network, while weather presenter Tim Davies has also announced his departure after seven years with the breakfast show.
For viewers who have made Today part of their morning routine, the changes represent a substantial overhaul of the program’s familiar on-air team.
Nine thanked Abo for her contribution to the network, describing her as an “exceptional journalist, presenter and colleague”.
Attention will now turn to the team Nine assembles for 2027.
The network has confirmed a new Today line-up will be announced soon but has not officially named Abo’s replacement.
Media reports have linked Sylvia Jeffreys with Abo’s position and Tom Steinfort with the seat previously occupied by Stefanovic, although Nine is yet to confirm the combination.
For Abo, however, the next move can wait. After years of international assignments, breaking news and early starts, she said she was looking forward to spending time with her young family and beginning whatever comes next.
