While we all aim for a clean and healthy living space, there are times when ridding your home of nasty mould quickly becomes a losing battle.

However, thanks to home improvement expert Anita Birges, homeowners now have some clever tricks up their sleeves to stop mould dead in its tracks.

Birges recently took to Instagram to share her do-it-yourself method for keeping mould at bay, revealing the special concoction she uses to clean away the mould and prevent it from returning.

“You asked for it!! You got it!!” she wrote alongside the instructional video.

“And it could not have come at a better time, as it’s been about a year since I last cleaned out this bathroom cabinet…. and guess what was lurking in there? MOULD.

“So of course I had to share the secret to my Mould Prevention Spray and how I would tackle something like this.”

Birges started by taking everything out of the bathroom cabinet and tidying up the area. After that, she used a mixture of half isopropyl alcohol and half warm water to clean the mould, applying it to the surface with a soft microfiber cloth.

Once the inside of the cabinet was clean, she shared her homemade mould prevention spray recipe, made up of 100ml white vinegar, 10 drops clove oil and 10 drops tea tree oil.

“Spray on and let the solution dry. Don’t wipe away,” Birges explained.

This isn’t the first time Birges has revealed her arsenal for fighting the scourge of mould, she previously shared her ingenious methods for stopping mould before it starts by infusing chalk with clove oil, utilising silica gel packets, and harnessing the power of baking soda, to banish mould from the home.

“Is there anything worse than having mould in your cupboards, on your walls or on your clothes?” she wrote in her previous post.

“These have been tried and tested, and I want to share them with you.

“Here are 3 Simple Ways To Keep Mould Away.

“1. Put a few drops of Clove Oil on a piece of chalk and pop them into your drawers.

“2. Don’t throw away those little silicone packets you get inside packaging or shoe boxes. Use them in your wardrobe.

“I put mine into my shoes and it works a treat, especially for the leather boots.

“3. Leave an open box of baking soda under your kitchen sink. I also like to leave them in those beautifully organised cupboards under the bathroom sinks as well.

“Mould comes from the airs moisture and lack of ventilation in our homes. These little tips will help absorb that extra moisture and keep from mould appearing at all.

“Prevention is better than cure.”

While Birges’ tips are no doubt helpful and effective, they also serve as a timely reminder of the dangers associated with mould growth in homes. Mould spores can trigger allergies, respiratory issues, and even exacerbate existing health conditions such as asthma. Prolonged exposure to certain types of mould can also lead to more severe health problems.

Additionally, mould can cause structural damage to your home, compromising its integrity and potentially resulting in costly repairs. By adopting the home improvement expert’s suggestions and incorporating them into your routine, you can effectively safeguard your health and protect your property.
