She may be approaching 80 but Martha Stewart proved just how much difference a new haircut can make as she showed off the results of a recent makeover on social media.

Looking barely recognisable after swapping her trademark blonde bob for a choppier modern look, the 78-year-old oozed glamour as she posed for a photograph and declared that she was “ready for a slew of holiday parties”.

Martha pulled a sultry pose for the shot – which appeared to have been taken in a beauty salon at the luxury department store Bergdorf Goodman, as the US businesswoman was wearing a black robe over her a sophisticated black turtle neck jumper – as she leaned back in her chair with a slight smirk on her face.

It wasn’t just her hair that was different though as Martha also appeared to have had her make-up professionally done as she sported stunning smokey eyeshadow as well as a soft pink lip, while her skin looked absolutely flawless.

“Oh boy! What a great new haircut can do!!!!” she captioned the image. “Thanks @hairbyeugenetoye @ritahazan and of course makeup by @daisybeautytoye Ready for a slew of holiday parties!!!!”

Thousands of fans commented on the image, which she posted on Wednesday, with one saying: “You look stunning Martha!!!!!” Another wrote: “Stunning as always! Merry Christmas!”

Another commented: “You look GORGEOUS!” While another said: “You go Martha, it looks good!”

Stewart – who served five months in prison in 2004 after being convicted of felony charges of conspiracy, obstruction of an agency proceeding, and making false statements to federal investigators –  made headlines recently when she commented on another incarcerated celebrity.

During an appearance at the Vanity Fair summit in Los Angeles she made remarks about Desperate Housewives star Felicity Huffman’s prison style, describing the actress as looking “schlumpy”.

According to US showbiz website People, after being asked if she had any advice for Huffman, who was serving a 14-day prison sentence at the time, Stewart replied: “She should style her outfit a little bit more. She looked pretty schlumpy.”

Huffman – who is best known for her role as Lynette Scavo in the ABC series – was convicted of one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud earlier this year after being swept up in the hugely publicised college admissions scandal in the US. She was sentenced after pleading guilty to paying US$15,000 for someone else to take her daughter Sophia Grace Macy’s admissions test, however she was released from prison early in October this year, having served just 11 days of her sentence.
