Boonah to Celebrate Good Mental Health at Annual Community Expo

In the hit television sitcom Frasier, the title character famously ended his psychiatry radio show by wishing his listeners “good mental health.” That same sentiment will be front and centre when Carinity Fassifern Community Centre hosts its annual Fassifern Mental Health & Wellness Expo in Boonah on October 9.

What’s on offer

The free event, timed to coincide with Queensland Mental Health Week, will give visitors the chance to enjoy interactive workshops and discover local and outreach allied health services all in one place. The expo will feature everything from hand massages and self-care experts to multiple stalls covering NDIS, mental health, and family support and counselling services.

Guests can refuel with morning refreshments and a barbeque lunch, then grab a self-care bag filled with goodies on their way out. New children’s activities and cultural elements will also feature this year, making it a genuinely family-friendly day out.

Why this event matters for regional communities

Rhys Wilson, from Carinity Fassifern Community Centre, said the expo aims to strengthen social connection and inform the community about important services available across the Scenic Rim region and surrounding areas.

He said factors common to regional living, including prolonged drought, unemployment and social isolation, can genuinely contribute to poorer mental health and wellbeing among residents. The purpose of the expo, he said, is to help shine a light on mental health and reduce the stigma around mental illness, particularly in rural and regional communities, and to bring about positive, lasting change locally.

Previous Fassifern Mental Health & Wellness Expos have attracted several hundred attendees, with some visitors travelling from as far away as the Sunshine Coast to take part.
