She’s appeared in a string of iconic films over the decades and iconic Hollywood actress Diane Keaton is set to do it again when she debuts a new film targeted at Baby Boomers later this year.
Hot on the heels of 2018’s Book Club, Poms sees Diane play Martha – an older lady who joins a retirement village called Sun Springs. She jokingly tells other women in the retirement village, who are enthusiastically adjusting to their retirement by joining an array of different clubs, that she’s come there to die.
It’s not long before she’s greeted by neighbour Sheryl – played by Australian actress Jacki Weaver – and the pair strike up an unlikely friendship.
“I was hoping you’d be a man,” Jacki’s character says when they first meet. “There’s not enough erections around here as it is.”
Before too long, the women realise that Martha was a cheerleader when she was younger, but had to give it up because her mother was ill. They hatch a plan to let her live out her dream of being a cheerleader once again and before too long, the women in the village start their own cheerleading club for older residents.

Cheers star Rhea Perlman also appears in the film and her character Alice joins the squad. They enlist the help of a younger cheerleader to coach them into shape – who finds it difficult to deal with the women who suffer dizziness, are living with knee replacements and Jacki’s character who hilariously admits she once had chlamydia.
If the trailer is anything to go by, there’s going to be plenty of hilarious moments, as well as some emotional scenes that will be sure to take audiences through a rollercoaster ride.
The film is expected to be released in cinemas in May and was directed by Zara Hayes. Fans were quick to share their excitement for the new film on Facebook.
One person wrote: “Jackie Weaver, Diane Keaton what a line up, and good to see Rhea Perlman,(loved her in Cheers).”
Another comment read: “Definitely one to see. Hmmm now who could I get in my cheers squad. Cheers to that!”
A third added: “Oh dear I MUST be getting old – I really want to see this!”
