Granny pants comeback? Hilarious clip puts comfy undies back in spotlight

When it comes to finding underwear that’s comfortable and easy to wear, granny pants are definitely up there on the list for most women.

Famed for their high waists, comfy material and full coverage, these undergarments get a bar rap for being uglier than most other types of knickers and are usually favoured among older women. Because of this, there’s somewhat of a stigma and shame attached to granny pants – particularly when it comes to younger generations. But no more!

Now an underwear company in the United Kingdom is trying to change that and have created a hilarious campaign to introduce Millennials and younger generations to the granny panties. Sloggie’s Lil’ Ol’ Granny – Granny Got Pants commercial features a 56-year-old woman called Colette Zacca proudly wearing her granny panties.

Set to the tune of Sir Mix-a-lot’s catchy tune ‘Baby Got Back’, the clip begins with two young girls judging Zacca as she walks past them in her granny pants.

“Only a granny could wear those,” one of the girls says. “Yeah, the ‘70s called and they asked for their granny pants back,” the other girl adds. Zacca then begins singing about how much she loves her granny pants. Hilariously, it’s as though she’s in her own hip-hop music video.

“I like big pants and I cannot lie, you other ladies can’t deny, when a girl’s got pants as big as her face and they’re pulled up to her waist you say, ‘What?’,” the proud gran sings. She also sings about how great the pants are for holding in bellies and are great for “giving your bum good karma”.

“My comfy arse don’t want teeny weeny polka dot bikinis,” she sings elsewhere in the video. “Ladies if you’re in my zone, holla if you want a pair of your own.”

Throughout the clip, Zacca wears a variety of different granny pants and is joined by younger women who are also proudly wearing the underwear. People have praised the clip online, with one person on Facebook writing: “Collette doing her thing, just brilliant. Love it.”

Another comment read: “Absolutely Brilliant girl!!! Well Done,” while a third added: “Totally awesome. This has made my day! You go WOMAN!”

Amazingly, Zacca has become somewhat of a celebrity in the United Kingdom and became known as ‘the dancing granny’ after footage of her dancing went viral. The London local was filmed dancing in her underwear at the famous Notting Hill Carnival last month and became an online sensation almost instantly. Remarkably, it was later discovered that Zacca had undergone two hip replacements, which made her dance moves all the more incredible.

It didn’t take long for underwear companies to notice and weeks later, she’s now the star of her own campaign. Appearing on This Morning in the UK last week, Zacca explained that she’s actually not a grandma but that it doesn’t bother her.

When asked by hosts Ruth and Eamonn Holmes if she was offended by being called a grandma, Zacca said: “I’m actually old enough to be a granny. I kind of think taking hold of it and going, ‘this is what granny looks like these days’.”

She also said that she worked hard through rehab after her double hip replacement, which is why she’s able to bust the moves that she can.
