How to get that crisp clean starched look back in your clothes

There is nothing worse than spending ages ironing your clothes, then they don't look ironed five minutes later!

Remember how your clothes used to feel when your mum used to do them?

Not the lovely soft fabric wash she used to use, the opposite. The lovely pressed starched clothing that looked crisp and clean, and could practically stand up by itself. That professional look with no more creases!

Starching your clothing has almost gone by the wayside these days, unless you send your best to the dry cleaners, but there is nothing to stop you doing it yourself.

The idea of starching dates back to Egyptian times, but we’re not going back that far.

Why not make up a batch of your own old-fashioned starch, just like mum used to use? This method will give you an even starch application.

  • 2 tablespoons cornflour
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 300 ml boiling water

  1. Mix the cornflour and cold water to make a thin paste.
  2. Add boiling water to the mix and stir in.
  3. Once the temperature of the water drops to lukewarm the put your clothing in to be stiffened.
  4. Wring them out and hang to dry. No need for soaking.
  5. When on the line flatten out, and make sure the cloth is not all sticking together.
  6. Once dry (or even just slightly damp) give them a good iron and be impressed with the results!

When was the last time you starched your clothing?
