Disco fever! Melania stuns in eye-catching glitter gown at state dinner

Melania channeled high fashion for the Trumps’ first state dinner at the White House on Tuesday night – and once again stole the show among the room full of dignitaries.

All eyes were on the first lady as she stepped out in an eye-catching, glittering Chanel gown — a clever nod to her French guests, President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte.

In the past, first ladies have honoured the visiting country by wearing one of its designers, and Melania is keeping up the tradition. The sleeveless number featured a beaded boat neckline and a sheer, lace chest, hand-painted with silver and embroidered with crystals and sequins. The 47-year-old accessorised with a pair of silver pumps and skipped any jewellery to let the gown shine. She wore her brunette locks down for the evening.

Meanwhile, Brigitte, 65, stunned in a Louis Vuitton cream full-length gown with long sleeves, which she paired with a matching gold bag and heels. She wore her hair in an elegant bun and opted for simple gold and silver accessories.

During the evening, President Trump gave his wife a warm thank you for all her efforts helping to prepare the evening, before raising a glass to President Macron and the “unbreakable friendship” between the US and its oldest ally.

“To America’s absolutely incredible first lady, thank you for making this an evening we will always cherish and remember. Thank you, Melania,” he said, CNN reported.

Melania’s silver beaded gown was a standout of the evening, though didn’t quite top the commotion created by the all-white ensemble (hat included) that she wore earlier in the day. The gorgeous Michael Kors suit and skirt combo, worth U$2,195 (A$2,886), had fashionistas around the world showing her in praise.

In the lead up the event, Melania shared a number of shots to social media, giving the world a glimpse of the preparation that went into welcoming the Macrons to the White House. Taking to Instagram, she wrote: “Spent yesterday with my team checking on the final details of our first State Dinner with France.”

The dinner was the first Trump has hosted since taking office and highlighted America’s efforts to maintain ties with its European allies, despite periods of high tension over the past year. Trump drew the ire of his allies when he pulled out of the Paris Accord on climate change, and has experienced a strained relationship with British Prime Minister Theresa May.

Last year, he pulled out of a planned trip to the UK over fears protests would overshadow his welcome. Thousands of Brits signed a petition calling for his trip to be cancelled, arguing it would be an insult to the Queen to have to host Trump at Buckingham Palace.
