Erectile dysfunction is something that impacts a lot of men as they grow older, with many opting for Viagra and other medical treatments to cure their problem.

While these forms of medication work a treat for many, a popular new trend in the US has seen many Baby Boomers opting for electric shocks on their genitals so they can return to “business as usual” in the bedroom.

In a process called Gainswave, tens of thousands of sound waves are zapped into the penis as a way of increasing blood flow to the area and creating erections. According to the official website, the electric shocks have the potential to improve sexual function in men that live with both erectile dysfunction and Peyronie’s disease.

“The Gainswave procedure breaks up plaque formation in blood vessels and stimulates the growth of new blood vessels in the penis,” the website claims. “This increases the blood flow to the penis and improves sexual function. In addition, the Gainswave procedure activates the growth of new nerve tissue in the penis.”

It is believed that the process of neurogenesis has the potential to increase sensitivity in the penis. While it may seem like a quick fix, it’s not as simple as visiting a clinic and having your penis zapped once.

Most men are requiring between six and 12 sessions, experiencing electric shocks on the penis for up to 20 minutes each time. The results tend to last for up to three years, meaning that more shocks would be required after this time to maintain erections.

The website claims that men can apply a numbing cream to their privates before the treatment, with most men returning to life as normal immediately after their treatments. It is believed to have a 75 per cent success rate, with many experiencing random erections following their treatment. And, while erectile dysfunction isn’t something a lot of men or couples are comfortable talking about, this form of treatment has been used for 15 years around the world.

While this shocking form of treatment is another way of assisting with the problem, Harvard Medical School recently released further information about erectile dysfunction and what causes it. While it can be more common in older men, it can also be the result of other conditions and diseases.

Some people experience dysfunction because of certain medications they take, while stress, surgery, depression can all play a role. It’s also common in older men because tissues naturally become less elastic and the ways the body communicates with different organs and body parts slows down. It’s also common in men who live with cardiovascular problems.

Losing weight and maintaining a healthy diet can help, while it’s also important to talk with your GP and doctor about what options are available and will work specifically for you.
