Princess Eugenie delighted royal fans on Thursday evening when she shared a never-before-seen family throwback to social media.

The 28-year-old uploaded the childhood snap to Instagram and captioned the adorable picture: “#tbt to cheeky smiles and scrunchies with my sister.”

The sweet image shows the young princess and her sister Beatrice, now 30, donning matching yellow scrunchies.

The princess is one of the few royals to have a personal Instagram account, and regularly updates her followers with insights into her busy schedule.

As always, royal fans were quick to send their best wishes, with one writing: “Such an adorable photo, gorgeous girls.”

Another added: “Oh my word that is the sweetest photo ever!”

And a third wrote: “Such an adorable picture Eugenie! Love seeing old pictures.”

Princess Eugenie shares a close friendship with her big sister, and asked her to be the maid of honour at her extravagant wedding to Jack Brooksbank in October.

The sisters opened up about their close relationship in a joint interview with British Vogue earlier this year, but admitted that just like any siblings, they have been known to have their differences.

Beatrice said: “One of the biggest fights we ever had was about a pair of Converse trainers. We have the same size feet and both of us had identical pairs. One pair got trashed and the other sister may have swapped them.

The sisters will soon be celebrating Christmas together at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, where they will be joined by other members of the royal family.

And while usually only official members of the royal family are allowed at the table, this year the Queen has reportedly extended an invitation to Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland.

A report published in Vanity Fair in November cited sources who said the Queen was “very impressed” by Doria when they met ahead of Meghan and Prince Harry’s wedding and that she was aware the festive season would be tricky for the pregnant duchess, who would understandably want to spend time with her mother.

It’s the second year in a row the Queen has made special exceptions for Meghan at Christmas. Last year she invited the then newly engaged actress to spend Christmas with the royals, breaking years of tradition that decreed only those who had married immediate members of the royal family could join them at the lunch table.

This year’s Christmas celebration at Sandringham is expected to be particularly joyful for the royal family, which has celebrated a royal baby, royal baby announcement, two royal weddings and Prince Charles’s 70th birthday all within the last 12 months.
