Winter has arrived and the temperature has already started to dip, with night’s getting awfully chilly. So, it’s time to forget the summer salads for now and instead turn to some heartier meals to keep your belly full and warm. And one Aussie home cook has the perfect recipe to do just that!

The woman took to social media at the weekend to share a delicious recipe with fellow Aussies – slow cooker beef and vegemite pies. It may sound a little strange to begin with, but it looks absolutely mouth-watering. The recipe contains many kitchen staples, so you might not even have to head to the shops before trying them out.

The home cook used ingredients such as dried herbs, tomato sauce, olive oil, stock cubes, flour and of course vegemite, to make a rich filling for the meat pies which she cooked in a slow cooker. The mixture was marinated for around four hours and then piled into puff pastry sheets, topped with more pastry and baked quickly in the oven until golden brown.

“My chunky beef pies. I am super happy with how they turned out. Hubby ate two pies,” the post shared on Facebook group Slow Cooker Recipes Australia read. “I did the meat mixture in the slow-cooker.”

Fellow home cooks were impressed with her creation, with many eager to try out the recipe themselves. While others said they wished they could taste and smell the pies themselves because the photos made them look so tasty.

“Well done making a recipe from scratch,” one person commented. “Your pies will be absolutely delicious and I’m going to try this recipe myself to the letter. Thank you!”

“I have all of the ingredients, I might make for dinner. Yummy!” another said. While a third added: “They look fantastic. Would love smellavision and tasteavision.”

Meanwhile, if you’re wanting a small after dinner treat to enjoy with your evening cuppa in front of the television, another home cook has shared her recipe for three-ingredient shortbread. Rebecca O’Brien posted the recipe to the Facebook Group Crockpot/Slow Cooker Recipes & Tips recently and it well and truly sent the Internet into a spin. The main ingredients are flour, caster sugar and butter, but you can add in extra ingredients for some aded flavour, such as chocolate chips or cranberries if you like.

First sieve the flour into a mixing bowl, mix in the sugar and then rub in the butter with your fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Next, you can add in any extras you like, but if not, place the mixture into a greased cake tin and press down firmly with your fingers or the back of a spoon.

Put the tin straight into a hot slow cooker, with a tea towel under the lid to stop any condensation, and cook on high for two and a half hours or until light brown in colour. Once cooked remove the tin, sprinkle with caster sugar and leave until it has cooled slightly before removing and placing on a wire tray. It’s as easy as that!
