The terror attacks in London on Saturday night have left at least six people dead, the city’s Metropolitan Police have said,

The police also shot dead three of the attackers, police confirmed in a statement just released.

The statement from the Met’s assistant commissioner Mark Rowley said that reports started coming in at just after 10pm local time that a vehicle had struck pedestrians on London Bridge. The vehicle continued to Borough Market, where the attackers jumped out and began stabbing people in the street.

One of those stabbed was a British Transport Police Officer who was responding to the incident on the bridge. He was seriously injured, although his life is not in danger.

“Armed officers responded very quickly and bravely, confronting three male suspects who were shot and killed in Borough Market,” Rowley continued.

“The suspects had been confronted and shot by the police within eight minutes of the first call. The suspects were wearing what looked like explosive vests but these were later established to be hoaxes.”

He said police “believed” that six people had died, in addition to the terrorists. At least 20 casualties have been taken to hospitals across London, police said although the London Ambulance Service separately put the number at 30.

“We are reviewing and planning to strengthen our policing stance across London over the forthcoming days, and there will be additional police and officers deployed across the capital,” Rowley concluded.

Police did not elaborate on whether there are additional attackers still on the run, although news outlets reported that two were thought to be at large. Nor did police comment on the terrorists’ identities.

Witnesses said that the attackers were running into pubs in Borough Market to stab at the patrons inside, using long-bladed knives.

The brutal attacks come close on the May 22 suicide bombing at the Manchester Arena that killed 22 people. And on March 22, five people were killed when an attacker drove his car through pedestrians on Westminster Bridge.
