Nicole Kidman reveals the simple reason for her ‘seal clap’

Not even a last-minute wardrobe mishap prevented Nicole Kidman looking stunning at the Academy Awards.

Nicole Kidman got hammered online for her unusual style of applauding at the Academy Awards but the Oscar-winning has revealed the simple reason for her “seal clap.”

The Big Little Lies star told the Kyle and Jack O Show on Kiis 106.5 radio that she was terrified of damaging the huge pear-shaped diamond ring she was wearing at the glamorous event.

Host Kyle Sandilands told Kidman he’d guessed she was clapping awkwardly because she was wearing a millions of dollars on her fingers.

“I’m so glad you clarified that because it was really awkward! I was like gosh, I want to clap, I don’t want to not be clapping, which would be worse, right? ‘Why isn’t Nicole clapping?” she told Sandilands.

“So, therefore, I’m clapping bit it was really difficult because I had a huge ring on that was not my own, but it was absolutely gorgeous, and I was terrified of damaging it!”

The gorgeous star added to the 15 carats of ring bling from Harry Winston with a pair of Winston  Cluster Diamond and Spinel Drop Earrings in platinum and 18-carat yellow gold, a vintage 1963 Winston Cluster Diamond Bracelet in platinum and a Splash Diamond Bracelet in platinum, wearing a whopping 119 carats in total, according to Forbes.

The stunning jewellery helped Kidman onto all the best-dressed lists, even after her blush-coloured, intricately beaded Armani Prive gown apparently broke midway through the event, forcing the actress to swap from a crossed-back to a halterneck.

‘I had a bit of a panic because my strap on my dress broke when I got in the car,’ the actress told Today, according to reports.

The plaudits Kidman won for her look were far from the criticism handed out over her ‘seal clap’, which went viral online after the camera panned to her in the crowd.

But the star, who’d been nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Lion, took it in good humour.

“It’s like, is there not more important things to be focused on than the ‘seal clap’?” she told Sandilands this morning
