Kids not welcome on Richard Branson’s new cruise line

Nov 03, 2017

Richard Branson is launching a cruise brand called Virgin Voyages and it appears to be a very adult experience.

Not only are the cruise liners inspired by the world’s fanciest super yachts, but there’s also age restrictions imposed on guests.

It was revealed that passengers must be at least 18 to be allowed on the cruise, which is set to launch in 2020.

“Let’s face it, even parents could use a holiday from their little ones sometimes,” the website says.

“To relax, order a glass of wine and dedicate all of their attention to the voyage at hand.”

Passengers, or sailors, as they’re called, have the opportunity to secure their first voyage with a $500 deposit.

“We basically decided, ‘Let’s have a blank sheet of paper, let’s create the kind of voyage company that we would like to go on,’ and that’s what we’ve done,” Richard Branson said.

The ships will lodge 2,800 sailors and will be one of the most recognisable vessels in the water with the iconic topless mermaid guiding the ship at the hull.

The designers responsible for the vessel’s elegant look are also behind the likes of Ace Hotels, The Standard High Line and Mondrian Hotels.

Travel at 60 readers overwhelmingly prefer adults-only cruises over the family-friendly variety.

“We made a big mistake of booking a cruise during school holidays,” recalls Dianna Kenyon.

“There were over 800 kids on board and so many just running around completely unsupervised. Don’t get me wrong, I love kids but we’ve learnt from that for sure.”

Jennie Jenyns agrees: “It is good to see that Virgin’s new cruise ships are going to be only for the over 18s. [There are] plenty of other cruises for families with children.”

What do you think about adults-only cruises? Love the idea or think cruising should be a family affair?
