Cruise packing essentials

Have you ever gone on a holiday but forgotten to pack that one really crucial thing? Or have had to buy something you’d forgotten for a huge amount at your destination? With these packing tips for a cruise holiday, you will be the most savvy traveller on the ship! Feel free to add any others in the comments.

Put your shoes in a shower cap: When the ship docks, you’ll want to get off and walk around. Make sure you pack a shower cap so you can re-pack your sandy shoes without getting it everywhere!

Call your bank: Before travelling internationally, tell your bank where you’re going so that you don’t have any nasty surprises when you go to pay.

Put cling wrap over the tops of liquids: Leaks in your luggage are the worst so to avoid any spills, unscrew the lid and put cling wrap over the hole and screw the lid back on.

Use straws to keep your necklaces untangled: it sounds too simple but to avoid those annoying tangles and knots in your necklaces, put the ends through a straw and clasp together to hold.

Keep old medicine bottles: these little screw top bottles are great for keeping cotton tips and other small items you need for your holiday.

Coat hangers: some cruise ships don’t have coat hangers, or very few. Bring some extra to hang up your best outfits.

Power board: this is a must for a cruise if you’re bringing electronics. There’s nothing worse than needing to charge something and you only have one power plug in the room!

Packing clothes: it’s a well-known travel tip to roll your clothes, but when we do pack for a holiday, we end up packing more than we need. The best way to avoid this is by choosing things you can mix and match and only bring along basics. And when you’re on a cruise, no doubt you’ll be buying plenty of outfits along the way, so save some space for your gifts and goodies.

Plastic bags: yup – the humble plastic bag. Bring plenty as you’ll need them for wet gear, dirty clothes – you name it. I fold mine into triangles like so:

Bring an alarm clock: some cruise ships don’t have them so if you want to make the most of your day, bring one along. Mobile phones have them but you never know when your phone may die (or god forbid, get lost!). Better to be safe than sorry.

First aid kit: the cruise ship will have a nurse but why waste their time when you can patch up your own scratches and scrapes yourself? Bandaids are always handy to have on hand and in your carry on and purse.

Tea tree oil: bring a small bottle to treat little bites.

Travelon walking stick and seat: sometimes it can be busy around the deck so this handy product can help you out and give you a break at the same time.
